SheridanLaw, with its New York qualified team, can advise on legal issues and undertake certain matters that have arisen or have a connection with the United States. The work undertaken includes accidents whilst on holiday, insurance claims and negotiations, probate and contract matters.
Accidents whilst on holiday in America
SheridanLaw's American law team has been successful in numerous cases in obtaining compensation for clients injured whilst travelling on holiday in Florida, California, New York and other States. We have also successfully represented English people injured whilst working in the USA.
If you think you might have a claim in America it is vital that you contact SheridanLaw as soon as possible. The time period in which you must bring a claim (called a ‘limitation period’) varies considerably from one American State to another and in some States the period can be as short as one year. Furthermore, in some States if a municipality is involved, formal notice has to be served within an even shorter period, sometimes as soon as three months from when the accident occurred. Failure to meet these time limits could mean that you are barred from bringing a claim.
Working with our US based colleagues we can take measures to protect our client's positions whilst negotiations are being conducted.
Probate in America
Probate matters in the US can often be complicated, partly because the law varies from one State to another and partly because of the degree of proof that is often required. Matters can be further complicated where assets are in both the US and UK. An example is where we acted for the English beneficiaries of an uncle who lived in New York and died without leaving a Will. There were assets in England and in the US. By working with New York colleagues we were able to progress the matter in the US by dealing with issues of proof in England required for the New York assets and obtaining the release of assets that were in England.
