About Us

SheridanLaw Solicitors in Kingston upon Thames, Surrey was founded in 1983 by Ian Sheridan to serve the legal needs of the local community and now attracts clients from throughout the UK.

Whilst providing a wide range of services, SheridanLaw is best known for taking on complex, challenging and difficult cases, especially in the fields of medical negligence, product liability and disputes about wills.

A solicitors firm with a long history in Kingston upon Thames, Surrey and SW London

Since its founding in 1983, the law firm of SheridanLaw (previously called Sheridan & Co) has earned a reputation for integrity and professionalism, as well as for treating its clients with respect and consideration, and as a result has attracted clients from the rest of the country as well as Kingston, Surrey and London.  Despite attracting clients from across Surrey, London and the country, at SheridanLaw we have always remained committed to serving the needs of the local community in Kingston upon Thames, Surrey and surrounding areas. The firm is particularly known for its work in medical negligence compensation claims where it acts on behalf of patients to obtain compensation for injuries arising from negligent treatment by medical staff at hospitals and other medical establishments.

Specialist expertise from experienced professionals

The lawyers at the firm specialise in the following areas of law: Clinical / Medical Negligence, Personal Injury and Accident Claims, Wills, Trusts and Estates, Administering Estates (Probate), Contesting Will / Will Disputes, and Buying and Selling Property (Conveyancing) The firm has expertise in all these areas but is particularly known for its work obtaining compensation for clients injured as a result of medical negligence in either the NNS or private sector.

As well as having expertise in medical negligence and other fields of law such as contesting wills and personal injury, SheridanLaw has developed practice areas specialising in Legal Services for the Elderly and Learning Disability and Special Needs law. As well as providing specialist services for disabled and elderly clients, the law firm prides itself on providing a sympathetic service in its other areas of expertise, such as claims to sue the NHS, on behalf of elderly and disabled, as well as children.

The firm is also able to advise and undertake matters on behalf of UK residents who have legal issues in America.  We have particular experience in bringing claims for compensation for English people injured in the US. We work with leading US personal injury attorneys in New York, Florida and California, as well as in other American states, to bring claims for compensation in America on behalf of English people injured whilst on holiday or working abroad. Bringing a personal injury case in America is very different to the UK and it is critical to have a solicitor who has expertise in both the American and English legal systems. In some instances, we have brought claims in America that were previously being brought by other solicitors in England and succeeded in obtaining American level compensation for our clients, which in many cases is far higher than the compensation that would have been awarded in England.

Commissioners for Oaths

We have commissioners for oaths in our office in Kingston Upon Thames, Surrey who are able to witness the signing and swearing of documents such as affidavits and statutory declarations. We are also able to authenticate documents certifying that they are a true copy. Please telephone to make an appointment and the cost starts at just £5.

The flexibility to meet our clients outside of normal business hours and in their own homes

Although our normal office hours are 9-5.30, we have the flexibility to meet our clients outside of normal business hours, including early mornings, late evenings and on the weekend. Many of our clients use Norbiton station to commute to London and meet with us on their way to or from work - either before or after normal business hours. Where necessary we visit our elderly, disabled or otherwise home-bound clients in their own homes.

No win no fee litigation

One of the areas SheridanLaw is known for is no win no fee litigation both in the medical context, where we bring claims to sue the NHS, and in commercial litigation. Whilst many law firms will bring personal injury and medical negligence cases under no win no fee agreements, there are very few that will bring other types of litigation, such as commercial litigation and contentious probate claims (disputes about wills), under a no win no fee agreement.

SheridanLaw, however, is committed to using the no win no fee funding structure to fund commercial litigation. We take on cases where clients have spent tens of thousands of pounds in legal fees before switching to us to take over their case. We have then taken on the case under a no win no fee agreement where the client pays us nothing and we are only paid at the end of the case if we win.

Commercial clients like these, who are used to paying their solicitors an hourly fee, are often amazed at the amount of savings they can make by instructing us in their cases. Instead of paying their law firm monthly (and not knowing from month to month what they will pay) they have a solicitor who does not expect to be paid until the conclusion of the matter and then only if they have won the case. What is more, most of the fees are usually paid by the other party who has lost the case.

When asked, as we frequently are, why we are prepared to take on a case under a no win no fee agreement when other firms of similar calibre insist on an hourly fee, win or lose, our answer is that it both fits with our culture and makes economic sense. It fits with our culture because our partners are both New York attorneys as well as solicitors and developed their legal skills in an environment where it is normal for lawyers to share the risk with their clients. And it makes economic sense because when we win we are paid a "success" fee (for the most part by the losing party, rather than our client) that increases our hourly rate by as much as double. Given how often we win cases (most of the time) the economic case for taking on cases under a no win no fee agreement is clear. The question, therefore, should not be why are we willing to use no win no fee agreements to fund commercial litigation matters; but rather, why are so few of our competitors?

A comment on challenging a will: along with our medical negligence (and claims to sue the NHS) work, challenging wills is fast become a core area of our work. We have an enviable track record in getting excellent results for our clients who have concerns about an inheritance, wish to challenge a will, think a will is unfair or otherwise have a dispute or contention in relation to probate and wills.

Suing the NHS: our website gives a wealth of information on medical negligence law and claims to sue the NHS. We can also recommend medical negligence london which is a site we have created to help our clients who have a claim to sue the NHS or private doctor.

Accidents in America: this is a key part of our practice and over they years we have helped numerous english people who have had accidents in America. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have a possible claim for compensation in America.
